The story of Reecomb Lenses is not just about a business—it is about a family, a vision, and a promise. Our journey began in Khadki when my grandfather, with extraordinary courage, sold 40 of his buffaloes to buy a small shop. At first, it was a tea stall run by my father and uncle, but it was there that the true spark of vision was born. Listening to factory workers and locals complain about their eyesight, they realized that real service would be to give people the gift of sight.
With sacrifice and determination, our family turned that small shop into an optical business. It wasn’t about profit—it was about people. Even when a business partner left and mocked us, we continued to serve, often giving spectacles for free to those who couldn’t afford them. Our shop became more than a store; it became a center of care, where vision mattered more than money.
As children, my brothers and I worked after school, learning to grind lenses and cut glass. We grew with the industry, moving from glass lenses to CR39 and fiber. But we knew that skill alone wasn’t enough, so we pursued studies in ophthalmic technology, engineering, and optometry. Education gave us accuracy, while service gave us purpose.
Over time, our mission expanded into eye camps, where we sometimes gave away 100 spectacles a day. Even when challenges arose, we never stopped—because even if one person gained a clear vision, our efforts were worth it. From those sacrifices and relentless commitment, Reecomb Lenses was born.
Today, Reecomb Lenses stands as a symbol of affordable, high-quality, and compassionate eye care. Every lens we create is more than just a product—it is a window to a better life. From students to workers, from seniors to children, our promise remains the same: clear vision is not a privilege, it is a right.
My name is Dr. Sushant Shivaji Durkar, and I am the Co-founder of Recomb Lenses. I started this journey with my brother Ram Durkar. Our story is one of legacy, service, and unwavering vision. We are the second generation in this field, and we are continuing on the foundation laid by our father and uncle.
Our story started not with lenses, but with a legacy. In the late 1990s, our grandfather sold 40 buffaloes and bought a small shop in Khadki. There, our father and uncle started a tea shop. It was very successful, and by 1998, we were earning ₹10,000 a day. But our grandfather’s wisdom guided us: “We don’t want to make money; we want to serve people.”
Customers from the Animation Factory who came to our tea shop often talked about their eye problems. Hearing their difficulties, my uncle and father came to know their true identity. They decided to work in optics instead of tea. They believed that giving people the gift of sight would fulfill their grandfather’s dream of service.
To raise funds for this new business, our grandfather once again sacrificed and sold his remaining buffalo. When that wasn’t enough, he sold all the utensils in the house. His courage and determination were immense – he never backed down from his decision.
Our first optical shop was opened, but it wasn’t easy. The partner we had brought in was only focused on profit and was charging too much from customers. My father and uncle stood firm: “We didn’t start this business to make a profit. We want to serve.” The partnership suddenly ended, and we were saddled with a mountain of debt. We didn’t even have money for clothes or food. We borrowed money from friends and relatives and paid him back. The partner made fun of us, called us ‘beggars’, and opened his own shop nearby to compete.
But we did not give up. On the contrary, we focused more on our goal. We started giving free spectacles to the needy. People saw our integrity and supported us. Often, people would ask us to give free spectacles to the poor for payment. Our small shop was always crowded because people trusted us.
My brother and I grew up in the same shop. When we were in seventh standard, after school, we used to go to the shop and help our father and uncle till tenth standard. We learned to make spectacles, but we realized that a shop alone is not enough to provide real service; knowledge is also needed.
We took admission in MBBS at D.Y. Patil Medical College. We used to go to college all day and then go to the shop and help people improve their vision. We learnt how good quality spectacles can keep people’s eyes healthy.
This led us to embrace technology, providing our clients with advanced lenses and accurate vision tests. But my father insisted that our mission needed an MS degree for the future. Education brings precision, and that was the essence of service, he believed.
When an army officer saw our tireless service in eye camps and our willingness to provide free spectacles, our service got a new vision. He suggested that we serve in the army. My father’s dream then grew into a ‘Vision for India’—a mission to ensure that no one is deprived of the gift of sight.
The biggest challenge came when a doctor demanded a huge fee for the camp and threatened to close it. We were shocked. Our vision was to serve, not to pay for it. The camp was closed, and my father felt very sad. “We are straying from our mission,” he said.
This moment was a turning point. We could not let our goal die. So my father said to me, take admission in MBBS, you want to become a doctor, even though you are good in mathematics, but you want a doctor, according to his words, I took admission in MBBS and after completing it, my father did not stop there, he said that I also want an MS degree, you should do MS, I wanted to prove his faith in me. I completed my MS degree, and my brother and I started the REECOMB lenses brand because if the glasses are good, people's eye power does not change quickly, and if the quality is good, the scratches do not come quickly. There is a gap in the market between good glasses and Indian Optical. People either sell basic lenses or directly sell lenses with the same features from international brands at very expensive prices. Therefore, according to his company's values, we started a brand that is affordable for the pockets of Indian people.
